Announcement: FEMA Awards Main-Transit

FEMA Awards Main-Transit $213,389 in Operations and Safety Grants

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded Main-Transit Fire Department over $200,000 in grants through its Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG). The grant will be used to help fund much needed upgrades to Main-Transit's Personal Protective Equipment, including replacements for its aging, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).

Many of our SCBA's are reaching the end of their 15 year life expectancy, after which they are required to be removed from service," says chief Jon Kemp. "Our SCBA's are extremely vital pieces of equipment that help protect our firefighters' respiratory systems during fires, and other hazardous events, and this grant couldn't have come any sooner, " adds Chief Kemp.

"Our SCBA's are nearing the end of their life expectancy"

Safety Officer Carl O. Fischer, Jr., of the Main-Transit Fire Department, was especially elated by the announcement. "We've worked countless hours trying to secure this vital grant, and this is the successful culmination of a 2 year-long effort," says Fischer. Fischer – as the liaison for the grant team (which included Grantmasters Inc. of Lewiston) – initially requested a higher amount but was ultimately able to formulate a smaller grant amount in an effort to increase the ability of FEMA to fund the award.

Our mission has, and always will be to serve our district in the most capable and safest manner, and this grant will help us continue to do exactly that," concludes Chief Kemp.
