The Explorers

The Future of Our Youth & Community

The Main Transit Fire Department Explorer Post #2283 offers teenagers of ages 14 to 18 the opportunity to explore becoming a volunteer firefighter. Members of the Main Transit Explorer Post train in first aid and many aspects of firefighting and rescue skills. Explorers not only have the opportunity to train and interact with their peers, but also with many of the active firefighters of Main-Transit.

As an Explorer of the Main-Transit Fire Department, young men and women are allowed to respond to calls after obtaining the proper training. Explorers are required to obtain a CPR card (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) along with various EFAT (Emergency Fire Apprenticeship Training) courses completed with other area Explorer posts. Many of our members are also in the process of taking the New York State Certified First Responder course, which furthers their first aid knowledge and skills. Explorers are also allowed to attend various department training functions, as well as the annual explorer weekend held at the New York State Fire Training Academy in Montour Falls.

Explorers also participate in firematic competitions and are involved in the Western New York Explorer Drill Team Association. These races not only help to teach the Explorers the basics of firefighting, but also about teamwork. Our team traveled to Long Island to compete in the Annual New York State Juniors Tournament, this past summer. Being the first team ever from outside of Long Island, they earned an unofficial 7th out of 26 teams.

Explorers also are active participants in many fire department activities and projects. The young women and men of our explorer post contribute in many ways to local community projects such as:

  • Relay For Life: American Cancer Society
  • Erie County Volunteer Firefighter Olympics
  • Step up for a Cure: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

We are interested in young men and women that would like to explore the possibility of someday becoming a volunteer/career firefighter. The future lies in the hands of our youth. Any interested individuals can receive more information by checking out our Membership page.
